In 2019 CBS2 uncovered the “Forgotten Families,” pressured by NYC to relocate from homeless shelters into unlivable NJ homes. For a year, we investigated the “Special One Time Assistance Program.” NYC paid landlords one year’s rent upfront (around $20,000) yet many were never vetted and disappeared. The families no longer resided in NYC and were not eligible for NYC support.NJ cities struggled to provide comparable resources. Our investigation lead Newark, NJ and other municipalities to sue NYC in federal court. CBS2’s Lisa Rozner, Ali Bauman, Marcia Kramer, Tara Jakeway and Erminia Vacirca contributed to the investigation.
